Automated Warehouse Solutions
Safety that keeps the flow running in automated cold storage

In highly automated warehouse environments, systems are expected to run continuously, and even minor downtime can have significant consequences.
In Kuurne, Belgium, Coldo operates a highly automated freezer warehouse reaching nearly fifty metres in height. For Ceratec, responsible for delivering the automation solution, the challenge was clear: how to ensure safety, accessibility and maintenance without interrupting the flow.
A complex environment with no room for downtime
In environments like Coldo, where automation runs continuously, safety must be built into the operation without interrupting it. In cold storage environments, even short interruptions can increase energy demand as the system works to restore stable operating temperatures. This becomes particularly challenging in areas such as lifts and racking systems, where maintenance needs to be carried out without shutting down the entire installation.
This requires a system designed to:
- Ensure safe separation of zones
- Enable continuous operation in parallel
- Provide high accessibility for service and maintenance
The biggest challenge is combining safety with user-friendliness

A safety solution adapted to continuous operation
To meet these requirements, Ceratec worked closely with Axelent Benelux throughout the engineering phase. The ability to deliver components in structured packages for each area of the installation simplified both installation and integration.
To support safe and continuous operation, Axelent contributed with:
- Modular safety solutions adapted to different zones
- Fast feedback on design proposals
- Technical support for specific requirements
This collaborative approach made it possible to adapt the safety solution to different parts of the installation while maintaining accessibility and operational continuity.
Maintaining flow during maintenance and service
The result is a safety solution that supports both safety and uninterrupted operation.
By enabling maintenance work in isolated sections, the system can continue running without unnecessary interruptions, a critical factor in operations running around the clock.
At the same time, usability and accessibility remain high, ensuring that operators can work safely and efficiently within a high-demand environment.
“It is important that we split everything up so the rest of the installation can continue operating while maintenance is carried out elsewhere,” says Maarten Vanoverberghe.

Pallet Racking Protection: Prevent forklift damage to uprights and aisle ends
Every forklift impact against a rack upright creates damage that spreads beyond the point of contact. One bent upright lead to inspections, repairs, downtime and reduced load-bearing integrity. Repeated impacts shorten the lifespan of the entire racking system. Pallet racking protection reduces that risk by protecting the areas where collisions happen most often: uprights, aisle ends and exposed traffic zones.

Every unprotected zone in a warehouse is a problem that hasn't happened yet. This guide helps you choose the right barrier system for each area in your facility, from high-traffic forklift routes to loading docks and pedestrian crossings.

How to create a safe warehouse that supports long-term efficiency
A safe warehouse is not only about compliance. It is about preventing the types of incidents that cause injuries, damaged goods and costly downtime, including forklift collisions, falling pallets and structural rack failures. With correct planning, proper dimensioning and the right rack protection systems in place, you can significantly reduce these risks while supporting long-term operational efficiency.
